Well as you can see from these first shots we did not outrun the rain for today's Grand AM Rolex Verizon Wireless 250 race at NJMP. Not a total loss though, road racing needs more than a bit of rain to stop its forward movement.
Of course the first thing that went through my mind was, something is going to happen right as they brake for the first turn, it is good odds on a dry track, even better on a wet one. Sure enough the Prototype class did not disappoint, while breaking for turn 1 several of them got into each other leaving debris along the track for the GT class guys who were only seconds behind on their start. Thankfully none of them were caught up in the debris.
The initial crash was not the only rain cause terror of the day, the Jack Daniels Prototype car spun out coming over the hill and almost took us ( I mean me ) out except that he was able to kick the car the other direction and put it in the grass and barely avoid the gaurd rail. This spin out brough a localized caution to the track as he worked to get the car refined and back on the track, unfortunately just after getting going again it stalled back out in the chicanes and had to be towed back to the pits.
There were also several full course cautions several of which were done to check for the reported severe puddling on the track and give time to attempt to cut it down, something all of the drivers expressed gratitude for at the end of the day.
The rain overall made for a great race and fun exciting times to watch, I hope you did not miss it on Speed Channel, if so check it there may be a reshowing of the race, it is definitely worth watching.
